I love a good story. I love being transported to a new and interesting place in my imagination. Of course on occasion I actually like to travel to such places, but sometimes you have to settle for the easier to obtain option…a movie. Here is a list of my top 5 travel related movies. See if some of these are on your list.
#5:
THE HANGOVER (2009, Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper)

I know you’re probably wondering “what the heck is that doing on the list” but hear me out. A group of guys travel to Las Vegas for a final weekend of fun before one of them walks down the aisle and says “I Do”. Madness ensues and things that you wouldn’t even imagine happening DO happen. It’s a trip involving opposite personalities and narcotics…and it all comes together in Las Vegas. Yep that about sums it up.
#4:
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher )

Once again hear me out….This is one of the most epic adventures ever. One day Luke Skywalker is simply chilling at home on the farm then next thing you know he’s flying across the galaxy with Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C3P0 and getting a crash course in Jedi:101 from Obi-Wan Kenobi. They’re on a mission to rescue a damsel in distress (who just happens to be Luke’s sister, sounds very Jerry Springer-ish). If you watch the Star Wars series long enough you’ll see them travel to some interesting places and meet some interesting “people”.
#3:
Eat Pray Love (2010, Julia Roberts, Javier Bardem)

Did I read the book….No…but I watched the movie. I enjoyed it because she travels, eats and falls in love. Who can ask for more? The more I watch this movie the more unrealistic it seems and that’s probably why I like it. Before you know it you might as well be watching a Disney movie.
#2:
Cast Away (2000, Tom Hanks)

Yeeaaaaaa ummmm this is not a movie you would think belonged on this list. It does involve a plane, and an island soooo… I don’t know how to make it work but I like Tom Hanks and I think he gives a great performance in this movie. “WILSSOOONNN”!
#1:
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989, Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo)

This is my favorite holiday movie and for this blog it’s also my favorite travel related (yes there is some travel–the extended family travels in from out of town to visit the Griswolds). With the holidays only months away this movie is definitely a go-to film for when you’re stuck in the airport terminal waiting on your twice delayed flight or stuck in the car next to your snoring sister for another hour on your way to grandma’s house. Pull out that tablet and start watching!!
Honorable mentions
- Coming to America (Eddie Murphy at a time when he could do no wrong)
- The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (wizards, elves and the precioussss)
- Dumb and Dumber (“Want to hear the most annoying sound in the world?”)
- National Lampoon’s Family Vacation (“Russ”!!)
There you have it, that’s my list of movies about travel. It’s probably no where near what you thought it would be but that’s what makes it unique. What are your favorites? Are any of mine on your list?
